1st International Master Course

March 25 to April 3, 2008

The International Master Courses of Academy Musical Spring will be held under the artistic directorship of Gábor Kerenyi and Jörg Bierhance and under the patronage of the Mayor of Kaposvár, Károly Szita. The Academy will offer yearly master classes for conductors and singers in Kaposvár, a city with long cultural and music theatre tradition.


After individual courses in voice and symphonic conducting, all participants will develop together and perform selected opera scenes. Only in this constellation conductors and singers can learn fruitfully from each others individual and professional needs.

Kaposvár Symphony Orchestra


Conductors will work and perform symphonic repertoire with the Kaposvár Symphony Orchestra for 6 days. Singers will work on repertoire of their own choice in Lied, Opera and Oratorium and on the opera scenes to be realised on stage in the second part of the course.

The second part of the masterclass is dedicated to the cooperation and interaction between the participating singers and conductors. Scenes and ensembles of the Mozart Operas "Don Giovanni" and "Cosí fan tutte" will be worked on together and put on stage for the final performance in Kaposvár Theatre "Csiky Gergely Színház".

Details:

Conductors 1st Part: Symphonic Conducting, March 25 - 31, 2008:

Haydn, Symphony 104
Beethoven Symphony No. 3
Brahms, Symphony 4
Shostakovich, Symphony No. 9



Further repertoire will include other symphonic pieces of free choice (subject to confirmation by the academy) and miscellanous ouvertures (Fledermaus, Zauberflöte, Egmont etc.). The goal is to achieve an equilibration of expression and clarity.

Rehearsals in Liszt Music School, final concert in Kaposvár Concert House. The performance will be video recorded (DVD).


Conductors 2nd Part: Opera Conducting, April 1 - 3, 2008:

Mozart, Scenes, Arias and Ensembles from "Don Giovanni" and "Cosí fan tutte"

The scenes (ensembles, recitativi accompagnati etc.) will be worked on in piano and orchestra rehearsals. Special item is the close look on problems of tempo relation and traditional mistakes. Final performance is conducted from the pitch in Kaposvár Theatre. The performance will be video recorded (DVD).


Voice and scenic work, March 25 to April 3, 2008:

Voice: free choice of repertoire of Lied, Opera, Oratorium
Scenic work: Mozart, Scenes, Arias and Ensembles from "Don Giovanni" and "Cosí fan tutte"

The voice course will highlight musical expression, solving technical problems and work on breath technique. In view of the scenic project, one centre of musical work is the personal research fo a "Mozart style" of singing.

In scenic work the participants work on selected scenes of "Cosí fan tutte" and "Don Giovanni". Particular work on singing with simple but intense body language interaction - independence of singing and body language - natural and effective appearance on stage - leaving behind typical singers stereotypical action.

Final performance will take place on stage of Kaposvár Theatre with orchestra, conducted by the participants of the conducting course. The performance will be video recorded (DVD).


Course fee:

Conductors: EUR 1.450,-
Singers: EUR 850,-
Registration fee: EUR 100,- (part of the course fee, only refundable in case of cancellation of the whole class by the Academy)

The Course fee includes hotel accommodation in double room. Single supplement on request. The hotel will be Laetitia Panzio, just across from the rehearsal venue.

Conductors: please send short c.v. and two letters of recommendation.
Singers: please send short c.v. and list of repertoire as well as the intended opera parts you wish to work.
The application can only be considered if the registration fee of EUR 100,- has been transferred to the account noted below.

Trip:

Kaposvár, located 60 km south of Lake Balaton, is easily reached by car or train from Budapest.
